Our unique OFSTED Reference
number is: 133093

Of the 14 areas or 'standards' a day care facility is encouraged to pass (either with a grade of either inadequate, satisfactory, good or outstanding), the Mews was successful in achieving Outstanding in all categories. In the words of the inspector:

"Overall the quality of the provision is outstanding. The nursery is of an exceptional standard with the children making considerable progress in their learning and development. All children are supported and learn at a pace that suits their individual needs. Self-evaluation is successful and the staff are resourceful in the planning for continuous improvement for the benefit of all." OFSTED Jan 2010

 ThWhat is OFSTED anyway?
The Office for Standards in Education (OFSTED), officially the Office of Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Schools in England, was set up on 1 September 1992.

It is a non-ministerial government department, independent from the Department for Education & Employment. OFSTED's remit is to improve standards of achievement and quality of education through regular independent inspection, public reporting and informed independent advice. OFSTED's principal task is the management of the independent system of school inspection defined originally by the Education (Schools) Act 1992. This provides for the regular inspection of all 24,000 schools in England which are wholly or mainly state-funded. A similar system of inspection applies to all institutions in receipt of public funding providing education for under 4-year-olds. Inspections are conducted according to a standard Framework for Inspection. The Framework sets out the principles and procedures for inspections and, among other issues, embraces four key elements which the legislation requires to be reported on:

  • the quality of education provided by schools
  • the educational standards achieved in schools
  • the way in which financial resources are managed
  • the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of pupils.

The Framework is publicly available, as are OFSTED's three Handbooks of Inspection which give detailed guidance on the conduct of an inspection in secondary, primary and special schools. The inspection process also includes a pre-inspection meeting for parents to express their views to the inspectors. For more information check out OFSTED's Web Site or send them an email Email OFSTED.
